NATCHEZ BURNING by Greg Iles | Kirkus Reviews
At issue is the murder of Viola Turner, once Tom Cage's nurse, before being transferred to Chicago, now back in Natchez and a corpse in her sister's house. What was the relationship between Tom, Viola, and the 'Double Eagle Club', an ultra-violent group of hardened men who considered themselves smarter, tougher, and more elite than their peers in the FBI-infiltrated Ku Klux Klan?
In Natchez, where the past is never truly 'past', long-buried secrets turn lethal when exposed to the light of day. For Penn Cage, the cost of solving this case will be no exception. Other books in this series.

Mississippi Blood Greg Iles. The first of a projected trilogy, Natchez Burning is Penn Cage's fourth outing. He was finishing the first of them when, on the evening of March 7, , and just south of Natchez, a truck on Highway 61 slammed into the car Iles was driving.
He was airlifted to a hospital in Jackson and spent eight days in a medically induced coma. When he woke up from the coma, he was missing part of his right leg. That accident nearly cost Iles his life. It did not put a stop to his writing life. Now the first novel in what is to be a trilogy of intricately interwoven novels is here: Natchez Burning William Morrow.
And what a novel it is — close to compulsively readable pages that take readers from some very dark crimes in the Deep South of the s to more recent times and just as deadly activities.

Penn Cage, who is white, is at the center of this sprawling story. Decades earlier, Viola, who is black, had been raped on more than one occasion by members of an especially sinister splinter group of the Ku Klux Klan operating with impunity in and around Natchez and across the Mississippi River in Concordia Parish. Reporter Henry Sexton of the Concordia Beacon in Ferriday, Louisiana, has been working for years to bring the murderous activities of that splinter group to full light and surviving members of the group to justice.eventsrj.com/images/2020-01-19/7467-site-rencontre.php
Review: NATCHEZ BURNING by Greg Iles (William Morrow)
At its core and at the family level, it asks: What was right and what was wrong to do decades ago? Update those same questions Penn and Tom Cage are forced to to read: What is right and what is wrong to do today? By the time of the car accident, Iles was days away from turning his manuscript for Natchez Burning over to his publisher. His courage in the face of racist threats has earned him and his son almost saintly status across the town. An old black woman, Viola Taylor, riddled with cancer, has come home from Chicago to die in Natchez. Frail and barely able to speak, she still has a story to tell.
When she is found dead, suspicion falls on the now retired Tom Cage.

Assisted suicide? Adams County is thrown into turmoil, as reputations forged over decades are on the verge of being trashed. As Penn Cage struggles to come to terms with the possibility that his father may be involved in serious crimes both ancient and modern, he is drawn into a circle of vicious and unscrupulous men, the like of which he has never encountered, despite his years of rough and tumble as a prosecution attorney.
The spider at the centre of the web is Brady Royal. Dancing to his tune are an elderly but still lethal group of group of ex-Klansmen who struck out on their own, and they know where the bodies of s civil rights activists are buried — because they were both the executioners and the undertakers. Penn Cage and his journalist girlfriend Caitlin Masters battle to keep Tom Cage firstly out of the dock and then, as he goes missing with an old Korean War buddy, out of the gun-sights of trigger happy and corrupt state troopers. To sustain pace, plot, character and interest over nearly pages must be a herculean challenge, but despite the physical size of the book, the action never loses pace.
